Băile Herculane

Băile Herculane is a town in Caraș-Severin County, Romania, located in the valley of the Cerna River. The settlement lies in a narrow mountain setting between the Cerna Mountains and the Mehedinți Mountains. It is a well-known spa town whose thermal springs were already used in the Roman period. Its present character is shaped largely by Habsburg-era spa architecture. The historic spa quarter includes several buildings and hotels dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The town is situated near Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park, so it also serves as a base for nature tourism in addition to spa travel. The local springs are known for their thermal and mineral waters. The town’s name preserves the memory of the Roman cult of Hercules. Its central area extends along the Cerna River, and the mountainous landscape strongly influences the urban form. Băile Herculane can be reached by road from the directions of Orșova and Caransebeș. It remains one of Romania’s best-known historic spa towns. Its built heritage and natural setting together define its distinctive identity.
