Caraș-Severin County is located in southwestern Romania, within the Banat region. Its capital is Reșița, which serves as the county's industrial and cultural center. Caraș-Severin County borders Timiș County to the north, Hunedoara and Gorj counties to the east, Mehedinți County to the southeast, and Serbia to the southwest. Covering an area of 8,514 km², it is the third-largest county in Romania. Approximately 67% of its territory is mountainous, encompassing ranges such as the Banat Mountains, the Țarcu-Godeanu Mountains, and the Cernei Mountains, with elevations ranging from 600 to 2,100 meters. The western part of the county transitions into hills and plains. The Danube River enters Romania along the county's southern border, and rivers like the Timiș, Cerna, Caraș, and Nera traverse the area, carving picturesque valleys and gorges. Caraș-Severin County is renowned for its natural beauty and protected areas. The county boasts 52 protected zones, including significant national parks such as the Semenic-Cheile Carașului National Park, the Nera Gorge–Beușnița National Park, and the Domogled–Cerna Valley National Park. Throughout its history, the county has been home to various ethnic groups, including Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, and Serbs. As part of the Banat region under the Austrian Habsburg Empire from 1718, the county experienced industrial development, particularly in mining and metallurgy. The city of Reșița was established in 1771 as an industrial center due to advancements in mining. The county's cultural heritage reflects the traditions and architectural monuments of its diverse ethnic communities.
