Brad

Brad is a town in western Romania, in Hunedoara County, on the edge of the Apuseni mountain area. It lies in a valley zone near the Zarand Mountains, within the drainage basin of the Crișul Alb. Brad is one of the smaller towns of the county but has an important local service role. The settlement functions as a center for surrounding hill and mountain communities. Its historical development was strongly influenced by mining in the wider region, especially gold mining. The area around Brad is part of one of the best known historic mining districts of western Transylvania. The town’s transport links are mainly important toward the western and central parts of the county. Brad has administrative, educational, and commercial functions for its surrounding area. Several smaller villages belong to the town administratively. The nearby mountain landscape and mining heritage remain defining features of local identity. Today Brad is significant mainly as a local service and administrative center. It is one of the better known small towns in northwestern Hunedoara County.
