South Banat District (Južnobanatski Okrug)


The South Banat District (Serbian: Јужнобанатски округ / Južnobanatski Okrug) is an administrative unit in Serbia, located in the southeastern part of Vojvodina, within the Banat region. Its administrative center is Pančevo. The district's population was 313,937 in 2002 and 293,370 in 2011.


Ethnic Composition (2002 Census Data)

The district is ethnically diverse. According to the 2002 census, the ethnic composition was:

  • Serbs: 220,641 (70.28%)
  • Romanians: 21,618 (6.88%)
  • Hungarians: 15,444 (4.91%)
  • Slovaks: 15,212 (4.84%)
  • Macedonians: 7,636 (2.43%)
  • Roma: 6,268 (1.99%)
  • Yugoslavs: 5,687 (1.81%)

Ethnic Distribution in Municipalities

Most municipalities within the district have a Serb majority. However:

  • Opovo (Antalfalva) has a mixed population, with Slovaks forming a relative majority (41%).
  • The district contains the southernmost Hungarian-speaking settlement, Székelykeve (Skorenovac), which is predominantly inhabited by Bukovina Székelys.
  • Other settlements with a Hungarian majority in the district include:
    • Fejértelep (Belo Blato)
    • Torontálvásárhely (Vojlovica, part of Pančevo)
    • Ürményháza (Jermenovci)

This district stands out as one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse regions in Vojvodina.
