Sibiu

Sibiu County is located in central Romania, within the historical region of Transylvania. Its capital is Sibiu, which serves as the county's cultural and economic center. Sibiu County is bordered to the north by Mureș County, to the east by Brașov County, to the south by Argeș and Vâlcea counties, and to the west by Alba County. The county covers an area of 5,432 km², accounting for approximately 2.27% of Romania's territory. Its southern part is dominated by the Southern Carpathians, including the Făgăraș Mountains, where peaks exceed 2,500 meters, as well as the Lotru and Cindrel mountains. These mountainous regions comprise about 30% of the county's surface. The Olt River traverses the mountains, linking Transylvania with Wallachia, while the Transylvanian Plateau lies to the north. Sibiu County's economy is among the most dynamic in Romania, with significant foreign investments. Key industries include machinery and automotive components, food processing, textiles, and woodworking. The county's northern area boasts substantial natural gas reserves, among the largest in the country. During the communist era, Copșa Mică was home to two chemical industrial complexes that heavily polluted the environment. After 1989, many of these complexes were shut down, and the area is gradually recovering. The county's cultural heritage is rich and diverse. Sibiu's historic center is renowned for its medieval fortifications and architectural value. The county is home to numerous Saxon fortified churches and villages, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as Biertan and Valea Viilor. Natural attractions include the Făgăraș Mountains, the Bâlea Valley, the Transfăgărășan road, the Păltiniș mountain resort, and the Cindrel Mountains.
