Sălaj

Sălaj County (Hungarian: Szilágy megye) is located in the northwestern part of Romania. Its northeastern part belongs to the historical region of Partium, while the southeastern part is part of Transylvania. The county seat is Zalău (Hungarian: Zilah). It borders Bihor County to the west, Maramureș and Satu Mare counties to the north, and Cluj County to the south and east. The county covers an area of 3,864 km², characterized by diverse topography. The Meseș Mountains run through the southern part, while the Silvania Hills are located in the north. The main river is the Crasna, which flows into the Tisza. Sălaj County boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. During the Roman era, the area was part of the Dacia province, evidenced by the remains of the ancient city and military camp of Porolissum, one of the county's most significant archaeological sites. The county seat, Zalău, lies at the foot of the Meseș Mountains. The city is home to the renowned Wesselényi Miklós Reformed College, where the famous Hungarian poet Endre Ady studied. Adjacent to the college stands a statue of Miklós Wesselényi, crafted by the sculptor János Fadrusz. Other notable attractions in the county include the Wesselényi Castle in Jibou, a remarkable example of Baroque architecture, and the Grădina Zmeilor (Garden of Dragons) nature reserve, famous for its unique rock formations.
