Ukraine/Kherson Oblast

Kherson Oblast

Kherson Oblast is located in southern Ukraine and is connected to the Black Sea and Azov Sea region. Its administrative center is Kherson. The oblast forms an important geographic link between the lower Dnipro, the Black Sea coast, and routes leading toward Crimea. Its terrain is characterized largely by flat steppe landscapes. The Dnipro River and its delta play major natural and economic roles in the region. Agriculture has traditionally been important, especially irrigated crop production. Grain, vegetables, and fruit are among the notable agricultural products. The oblast also includes the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve, an internationally known protected area. Its ports and waterways are economically significant as well. During Russia’s full-scale invasion beginning in 2022, much of the oblast was affected by fighting and occupation. Changes affecting the Kakhovka Reservoir and regional water management infrastructure had especially severe consequences for the area. The current situation of the oblast continues to be strongly shaped by the war.
