Ukraine/Kharkiv Oblast

Kharkiv Oblast

Kharkiv Oblast is located in northeastern Ukraine and borders Russia. Its administrative center is Kharkiv, one of Ukraine’s largest cities and a major industrial, educational, and scientific center. The oblast is historically associated with the Sloboda Ukraine region. Its economy has traditionally included machine building, chemicals, energy production, and agriculture. The landscape consists largely of plains and gently rolling steppe terrain. Important rivers in the oblast include the Siverskyi Donets and the Oskil. The region is also significant for transportation, with rail and road links connecting several parts of eastern Ukraine. Many universities, research institutes, and cultural institutions are concentrated in Kharkiv. The oblast has been heavily affected by Russia’s full-scale invasion that began in 2022. Multiple settlements and pieces of infrastructure in the region have suffered major damage. Despite these impacts, it remains one of Ukraine’s important administrative regions.
