Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is located in central-eastern Ukraine. Its administrative center is the city of Dnipro. The oblast is closely tied to the middle course of the Dnipro River and is an important industrial, transport, and logistics region. It plays a major role in Ukraine’s metallurgy, machine-building, and mining economy. Iron ore extraction around Kryvyi Rih is of national importance. Alongside major cities and extensive industrial zones, the region also contains agricultural land. The oblast is connected to other parts of Ukraine by a dense rail and road network. The Dnipro River and its associated reservoirs are important for the economy and for energy production. The present administrative unit was formed in the Soviet period and remains one of the most populous regions of Ukraine. Its cultural institutions and higher education are concentrated primarily in Dnipro. Because of its strategic position, the oblast has an important role in the functioning of the modern Ukrainian state. Among its notable urban centers are Kamianske, Kryvyi Rih, and Nikopol. The region’s contemporary character is shaped by industry, the river corridor, and a network of large cities.
