Alba

Alba County is located in central-western Romania, within the region of Transylvania. Its capital is Alba Iulia, which serves as the county's historical and cultural center. Alba County is bordered to the east by Sibiu and Mureș counties, to the west by Bihor and Arad counties, to the north by Cluj County, and to the southwest by Hunedoara County. The county covers an area of 6,242 km², with approximately 59% of its surface being mountainous. The Apuseni Mountains are located in the northwest, while the Șureanu and Cindrel mountains, part of the Parâng Mountains group, are situated in the south. The eastern part of the county features the Transylvanian Plateau with deep but wide valleys. These regions are separated by the Mureș River valley. Alba County boasts a wealth of natural and cultural attractions. The Apuseni Mountains are popular among hikers and nature enthusiasts. Notable natural formations include the Scărișoara Ice Cave and the Detunata basalt formations. The county's cultural heritage includes the Alba Iulia Fortress and the Bethlen Castle. The county's economy is diverse, with significant industries in food processing, textiles, woodworking, machinery manufacturing, paper and packaging materials, and chemicals. Mineral resources in the county include precious metals (gold, silver), salt, and construction materials such as marble and granite.
