Vulcan

Vulcan is a city in western Romania, in Hunedoara County, situated in the Jiu Valley. It lies in the mountainous zone of the Southern Carpathians, near the Vâlcan Mountains. Historically, its development was linked to coal mining, like that of several other towns in the Jiu Valley. Mining long shaped local employment, the urban form, and community life. After the decline of the industry, Vulcan also underwent significant economic change. Today the city forms part of the network of settlements in the Jiu Valley and is connected by road to the surrounding mining towns. Its mountain setting also gives it a favorable position for hiking and regional tourism. Administratively, it is a town. Its present-day character reflects both its mining heritage and the surrounding mountain landscape.
