Velykyi Bereznyi
Velykyi Bereznyi is an urban-type settlement in western Ukraine, in Zakarpattia Oblast, within Uzhhorod Raion. It lies in the upper valley of the Uzh River near the borderlands with Slovakia and Poland. Historically, it served as an important local centre in the Uzh region. Today it remains one of the better-known settlements in this mountainous and forested part of Zakarpattia. Its administrative role was stronger before recent territorial reforms in Ukraine, but it still functions as a significant local service centre. The surrounding landscape is defined by hills and mountains connected with the Eastern Beskids. The nearby Uzhanskyi National Nature Park makes the area important for nature tourism and hiking. The built environment reflects traces of the region’s multiethnic past. Its population has historically included Ukrainians, Hungarians, Slovaks, and other communities. In transport terms, the settlement stands on the route leading northeast from Uzhhorod into the upper Uzh valley. Because of its borderland location, it also has wider regional connections. Its present-day character combines a small-town centre, public institutions, and close ties with the surrounding villages.
