Lupeni

Lupeni is a city in western Romania, in Hunedoara County, located in the Jiu Valley. It lies in a mountainous setting within the Southern Carpathians. The city’s development was closely tied to coal mining, which for a long time formed the basis of the local economy. Lupeni was one of the significant mining towns of the Jiu Valley, and its social and economic history was strongly shaped by the extractive industry. With the contraction of mining, the city’s economy and demographics changed substantially. At the same time, Lupeni serves as an important gateway for mountain tourism toward the Retezat area and the Vâlcan Mountains. The nearby Straja resort and ski area is one of the best-known tourist centers in the region. Administratively, Lupeni is a municipality. Its present character is shaped both by its mining past and by its mountain environment.
