Hunedoara is a city in western Romania, in Hunedoara County. Its best-known landmark is Corvin Castle, one of the most important medieval castles in Transylvania and the defining monument of the city. The city lies in the Cerna River valley, near the Poiana Ruscă Mountains and within reach of the Jiu Valley region. In the 20th century, Hunedoara became one of Romania’s major iron and steel centers, and its industrial heritage still shapes the city’s identity. After the decline of heavy industry, the local economy diversified, while tourism and services gained greater importance. In addition to the castle, the city contains other historic and religious sites. Hunedoara is administratively a municipality. It is one of the best-known historic urban centers in Hunedoara County and an important destination for cultural tourism. By road, it is well connected to Deva and other settlements in the county. The present-day city combines traces of its medieval past with the legacy of its industrial era.
