Hațeg

Hațeg is a town in the southwestern part of Hunedoara County, located in the Hațeg Depression. It is one of the main gateways to the Retezat Mountains. Because of its geographical position, the town is regarded as a natural center of the basin. Hațeg provides administrative, educational, and commercial services for nearby villages. The surrounding area is especially known for its rich archaeological and historical heritage. Several important medieval churches and manor sites are located near the town. The Hațeg Depression also has an important place in Romanian paleontological research. The settlement belongs to the historic and ethnographic region known as Țara Hațegului. In transport terms, Hațeg lies near the meeting zone of routes leading toward Deva, Caransebeș, and mountain areas. The town is not large in population, but it has a central role in southern Hunedoara. Its character is shaped by a natural setting, historic heritage, and the nearby mountains. Today it functions primarily as a small service town and a starting point for tourism in the area.
