Călan

Călan is a town in Hunedoara County, located in the area of the Strei valley. It lies between Deva and Hațeg along an important transport route. Călan has a significant industrial past, especially connected with metallurgy and heavy industry. Its development in the twentieth century was strongly shaped by industrialization. The settlement is one of the smaller urban centers in the central part of the county. Its surroundings combine agricultural land with hilly landscapes. Administratively, the town includes several nearby villages. The nearby Strei corridor has historically been an important transition zone between the Hațeg Depression and the Mureș valley. Today Călan mainly has local administrative and service functions. The legacy of its industrial period is still visible in the town’s character.
